The Chapel

Sadly, Gibsons' Chapel was demolished in mid- December 2007. I'm glad that we got these pictures before that happened.

The dates on some pictures are not accurate, the camera was not programmed.

Gibson's Chapel (M.E.)

Gibsons Chapel was built in 1855-6 by Mr. Richard Stamp, at the cost of seven hundred dollars. It was dedicated in February 1856, the dedication sermon being preached by Rev. John Coil, of the Pittsburgh Conference. Before the erection of this church house, the Methodist's of that vicinity had their membership at Barnesville. At the start, as a separate congregation there were only twelve members. But' notwithstanding the smallness of their number, they boldly ventured upon the building of their church, trusting to the future for additions to their number.  Mr John R. Gibson kindly donated to the church three-fourths of an acre of ground as site for house of worship and burial ground. He also , largely aided with funds towards the erection of the church, and after it was built it was generously called Gibson's Chapel,  on consideration of Mr. Gibson's worth as a man, as well as the assistance he gave the feeble congregation. In a year or so, the Chapel became to small to accommodate the people that attended the meetings held there, and an addition of fourteen feet was put to the original building, at a cost of two hundred and eighty dollars.  The house will now seat about three hundred persons in comfort. The present stewards are John Gibson and John W. Chaney, and the membership is eighty-three. Rev MahlonJ. Slutz is preacher in  charge  of the Chapel at the time. Almost as soon as the house was built, a Sunday school was organized in connection with the church, and keeps up active work from March to December of Each year.  (History of Belmont and Jefferson County 1880  By: J.A. I also read in another book that possibly the siblings of Isaac C. Parker as well as his parents are buried there. He was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to bring order to the United States Indian Territory.

The Cemetery is located Range6-Township8-Section29  in Warren Township, Belmont County Ohio on County road 114

I will see what else I can find

This used to be a very busy place. It was the site of weddings, funerals and church services. It sits atop a hill out in the middle of nowhere and is quite serene. I hadn't seen it for years and was dismayed at the condition of the chapel. Although the frame and floor is sturdy, windows have been broken and boarded up, the ceiling is starting to fall and the outside walls look like they have been broken and removed in places. It's also inhabited by birds and bats and whatever else.
The cemetery is still being used, we saw a marker as current as 2004. But most of the burials are old and some ornate. Historically, we saw  markers from the Revolutionary and Civil wars.
I would imagine the folks that built this place would not be very pleased to see it's condition today, due to vandalism and neglect.

Investigation Report

Date : May 01- May 08, 2007
Location: Gibsons' Chapel & cemetery
Conditions: clear & warm, no breeze, beautiful evening
Investigators: 6
Baselines: temp 72 degrees, EMFs; Gauss 0, Cell Sensor 0. This place is in the middle of reclaimed strip-mining. The closest house is 2 miles away
and there are no electrical lines, ect. within sight.
Equipment: digital & cassette voice recorders, EMF meters(Gauss, ELF & Cell-Sensor), infrared thermometer ,cameras (digital, 35mm), dowsing
                 rods
The team has witnessed shadows moving in the chapel, as well as knockings. We also recorded EVPs of  apparent shuffling, whispering and two spoken of "get out," which seem to be directed to a particular member of our team. Some experienced cold spots and tingling on their shoulders and the back of their necks. But the environment on a whole seems welcome and comforting, as if someone was glad for company.

Data:
1) We did get an EMF reading of  3.0 on the Cell Sensor meter once in the church, along with a red light on the ELF meter. These occured while
speaking  and encouraging anyone present to come forward and  be known. They also coincided  with orbs captured by the cameras.
2) A very distinct odor of cherry pipe tobacco with would drift around the whole outside chapel area. It seemed to move about a great deal.
This also coincided with a red ELF  reading and orb pictures.
3) Two dramatic temperature drops. One drop started at 76 degrees and went down to 26. The other ranged from 68 to 14. Both readings would
drop and then return to the original as if we were being approached and then retreated from. These were in the actual cemetery.
4) By dowsing, it was expressed that someone is sad about the conditions of the chapel due to neglect.

Whether or not you believe orbs are "legitimate" this is an awesome picture.

We noted a moving energy between the stone. These people used to be my neighbors. I'm not sure what those glowing colors are from.

There seems to be some sort of mist on the right.

As usual, Lori followed by orbs!

We took this picture as we were leaving. There was no fog that night.

We had seen a flash above us and were looking up.
