Had an interesting experience at Salem Cemetery. Last October, me and another
member went down on a dreary Sunday afternoon just to get pics of
Louiza Fox's grave for our site. The whole energy in the valley that day
was electric.I pulled up into the driveway and as soon as we stopped, we
could hear a loud tap-tap-tap that sounded like 2 small tree branches
being struck together. It was in total rhythm like a drum and
continuous. So I picked up my aluminum ball bat & camera, and
Brenda got out her cell phone & pepper spray LOL . But she stood with one foot on
the ground and the other inside the Tracker while I walked towards the
sound. It seemed to becoming from the area close to where the church
had stood.
So I walk up the road about 100' and as I stepped on the grass,
the tap-tap-tap started to slowwww down, the closer I got to the bushy
area, the slower it became. Then it stopped. Then I stopped. And backed up. And jogged backwards.
Brenda yells "Get in the Tracker!" I yelled back "NO! I'm GETTING these pictures!!" So
I ran down the fenceline and got 2 quick captures and then we heard
this yell, twice. Very loud and I cannot even describe it except I
thought to myself "I understand why they called them yowees." I have no
idea where that thought came from.
I wondered if we had come upon some ritual and was it real or residual? We've been there many times throughout the years and we've been there since. But that was the only time I ever ran.
